This year, PATA Capilano University Student Chapter and partner Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Student Association (TRECSA) hosted their 5th annual World Tourism Day (WTD) event.
Each year on September 27th, thousands of people around the world unite to learn about the role of tourism within the global sector. This day aims to raise awareness about the tourism industry and how it affects political, environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic values worldwide. This year’s theme was “Tourism and Rural Development”.
Due to Covid-19, this year’s event was hosted virtually for the first time ever. A majority of the event revolved around panelist discussions. Five tourism industry professionals were hand selected by TRECSA’s executive team to take part in educating the attendees on tourism and rural development, as well as the future of tourism post-pandemic. Our panelists included Rick Antonson (Author and former CEO & President of Tourism Vancouver), Candace Campo (Owner and Operator of Talaysay Tours), Claire Bennett (Author, International Educational Tour Guide and advocate for Responsible Volunteering), Ellen Walker-Matthews (Vice President of Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association), and last but not least, Malia Asfour (Director of the Jordan Tourism Board in North America). The panelists delivered an inspiring discussion on tourism, rural development and the challenges of COVID-19.
World Tourism Day 2020 was a great success! Thank you to all of the guest speakers at the industry panel and to everybody who participated in the event! We are looking forward to World Tourism Day 2021!
