The Capilano University Student Chapter of PATA was selected as the honorary awardee of the PATA Student Chapter Award of Excellence for our activities in its first year.

Over the course of the 2017-2018 school year, our chapter has hosted events and participated in a number of activities to bring the school, regional, and international communities closer. These include:

  • Cap U Street Party: An opening day booth was setup to welcome new students and share information about the goals and mission of the newly established PATA student chapter.
  • PATA Travel Mart: Two student representatives were sent over to Macau for a week to be at the forefront of international discussions about the travel trade industry. These activities also helped our chapter to build lasting connections with industry professionals and other student chapters, providing direction and ideas for what comes next.
  • World Tourism Day: Gwendal Castellan, Tourism Vancouver Sustainable Destination Specialist, was invited to speak to students about the destination’s sustainable development efforts.
  • Crab Park Cleanup: Through partnership with Shoreline Cleanup and Keep Vancouver Spectacular, student volunteers removed over half a dozen bags of garbage from the beach and park over the course of the day.
  • Welcoming & Orienting Gap Year Students: We assisted Lattitude Global Volunteering as tour guides with local knowledge and connections for incoming international volunteering gap year students.
  • High School Case Competition: We hosted four teams of Metro Vancouver high school students as they prepared and presented their concepts for mitigating overtourism through dispersal. Guest judges included tourism professionals from TIABC, go2HR, ConnectSeven Group, and Capilano University’s Tourism Management program.
  • PATA Annual Summit: A student representative attended the summit in Gangneung, South Korea to bring back industry knowledge, organizational direction, and international connections. In return, a deeper sense of ties between the many PATA chapters and our Capilano University Student Chapter was established.
